    Description
    Intro

An idea to develop a publicly available online interactive map of water quality within Russia came from the creators of the Russian TV-program on health education. The idea was supported by the Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare. The project special portal displays information on water quality in terms of content of harmful impurities and microorganisms and information on possible risks for health when using water in a particular region or locality.

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

A team of IT-experts and water supply engineers developed Internet-portal “Water Map of Russia” which provides three types of data. First of all it displays data on the composition of water in various cities of Russia on an interactive map. Information is based on such characteristics as the level of microbial pollution, hardness indicators, the content of iron, iodine, fluorine, sodium, calcium, lithium, magnesium, manganese, boron, chromium, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, lead, nickel, strontium, silicon, aluminum and chlorides. Based on the analysis of these data, the authors of the map show health risks for each particular region. The risks are divided into several categories according to the health problems they can cause: heart and vascular diseases, cancer, kidney disease, infertility, diseases of digestive system, reduced immunity, etc. Finally, the portal should provide information on location of labs of water quality control and local offices of the Federal Service for Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare.

    Results/Outputs/Impacts

Main output of the initiative is providing people with access to updated information on the quality of water in the region or city where they live, which will allow more information-based approach to household water supply. Organizers of the online water map also expect that this initiative will encourage local authorities to pay more attention to environment.

    Enabling factors and constraints

Enabling factor is that lead entity of the project is the federal service which possesses administrative mechanisms for collection, accumulating and dissemination of wide range of information regarding water quality and composition. Main constrain is that sanitary supervision of water includes not only assessment of some relatively permanent elements (chlorine, fluorine, etc.), but also the bacteriological composition of water, which requires regular update of information on the map.

    Sustainability and replicability

Such an initiative is highly relevant and useful in many spheres where more public transparency and access to information is essential for human well-being and public health. For instance, it could be replicated for providing information on air or soil quality in different Russian regions or in other countries.
