Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All)

SE4All has four main tracks, focused on financing, efficiency, access, and renewable energy. The GEF is involved in all tracks and is seeking to provide catalytic investment to support specific initiatives. Furthermore, the GEF is urging countries to consider use of GEF resources in country specific projects aligned with SE4All objectives. Among many examples, here are two recent announcements:In collaboration with EBRD, the GEF will provide support for an Accelerator for Global Energy Efficiency Financing. The purpose of the Accelerator is to help unleash financing from domestic commercial banks in emerging economies for energy efficiency investments by private companies. The Accelerator will help identify market opportunities for energy efficiency investments by building capacity in domestic commercial banks to integrate energy efficiency financing into their business strategy and help launch an energy audit program to build up a pipeline of financeable energy efficiency projects. Once deployed, it is expected that the Accelerator during its first three years will engage with more than 100 commercial banks and undertake up to 2,000 energy audits resulting in an annual estimated GHG reduction of to 11 million tonnes. The Accelerator is building on the EBRDs successful experiences and lessons from Eastern Europe. In collaboration with UNEP and the International Copper Association, the GEF will provide support for an Accelerator for Energy Efficient Appliances. The purpose of the Accelerator for Energy Efficient Appliances is to build a global coalition of governments and private sector players to phase out the use of energy inefficient appliance (e.g. refrigerators, air-conditioners and small electrical motors). The Accelerator builds (and expands upon) the successful en.Lighten initiative which focused on phasing out inefficient lighting. The Accelerator will focus on three activities: (i) it will enhance the global knowledge base about best practices in appliance efficiency and priority technologies; (ii) it will carry out country assessments focusing on readiness of policies, regulations and standards related to appliance efficiency and provide science-based estimates of the impacts and benefits of transitioning to efficient appliances, to build local awareness and ownership of the agenda; and (iii) it will engage relevant private sector players who are global market leaders to build support for an action campaign to move towards efficient appliances.
