Pintuco at Rionegro. First production facility for paint and coatings certified as Carbon-Neutral. This addresses the SDG 13 - "Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts"

    Description
    Intro

Pintuco is paint and coatings manufacturing Company, with presence in Central America and Andean region countries. Committed to environment we decided to work towards certifying its largest production site located in Colombia, taking as baseline year 2016. Since 2013 Pintuco has been measuring its CO2e from this site and implementing actions to decrease the emission by manufacturing processes. Since 2018 the company decided to go for the Carbon Neutral certification, as baseline year 2016. Besides showing its commitment towards the reduction of GHG generated by its operations, also compensates its emissions through pay for environmental services scheme BanCO2 Plus

    Objective of the practice

Mitigate and compensate the greenhouse gas emissions derived from the productive processes carried out in Pintuco, in order to minimize the environmental impacts associated with climate change.

    Partners
Peasant families affiliated to the BanCO2 Plus scheme. Shareholders. Customers. Competitors. Suppliers: Certifying entity (Icontec), GAIA environmental services, Masbosques
    Implementation of the Project/Activity

    1. Measurement: Every year the GHG is measured through GAIA Environmental services. 2. Check: Action carried out by ICONTEC, with the objective of having an external right. 3. Compensation: Through the BanCO2 Plus project. 4. Reduce: Make actions that have allowed it to decrease the CO2e tons emitted

    Results/Outputs/Impacts
Due to the different strategies implemented by Pintuco to decrease its GHG emissions at the Rionegro site, the emissions in 2017 where 40% below 2016 levels, and the trend is towards further reduction. Thanks to the resources contributed by Pintuco to compensate its GHG emissions (4,441.2 tons CO2e between 2016 and 2017), two families of the region that belong to the pay-per-environmental-services system have been able to improve their quality of live, and from their households they take care of the strategic ecosystems around them, in the same geographic area the factory is located. With their help Pintuco and BanCO2 Plus take care of indigenous fauna and flora and contribute to the diminishment of global warming.
    Enabling factors and constraints
Enabling factors: Pay-per-environmental-services system in the region. Top management commitment to the project. Technical team involved in the development and continuity of the project. Constraints: Market difficulties may hinder further reductions. Some GHG reduction alternatives require high investment.
    Sustainability and replicability
BanCO2 is a pay-per-environmental-services system that applies to ecosystemic regions such as native forests. It focuses on measuring the carbon stock sequestered by forests, certified through Masbosques by Icontec. The Carbon-Neutral certificate creates a value-added for the company by showing its stakeholders the companys commitment towards sustainability. For 2019, the company is committed towards further reduction of its emissions by process improvement, the renewal of its neutrality certification for 2018, and the continuity of its contribution by compensation with peasant families of the region.
    Conclusions

By influencing other parties such as suppliers, customers, competitors or even neighboring companies to decrease or compensate their GHG emissions, Pintuco mitigates the increase of the mean global temperature. Taking care of local ecosystems contribute to the protection of endangered species such as colored pumas, guaguas, deer, ñeques, gurres, opossums, rabbits, tatabras, squirrels, etc. With these efforts, Pintuco is showing that it searches for better solutions to transform and protect with color (as its higher purpose reads) making sure that its paint and coatings are produced by means of environmentally responsible processes.
