    Peru is located in one of the most seismically active areas in the world: the Pacific Ring of Fire. For this reason, throughout its history, the country has been affected by numerous earthquakes, some of significant magnitude (Mw > 7.0), capable of generating secondary phenomena such as tsunamis.
    In Peru, tsunami events have been recorded since 1586, notably including the events of 1746 in Lima and Callao (5000 deaths), 1996 in Chimbote (15 deaths), and 2001 in Camaná (86 deaths). Furthermore, tsunamigenic events in neighboring countries could also cause some damage to our coasts. However, it is near-field or local tsunamis that require particular attention, as there is an approximate time of only 15 minutes for the population to evacuate to a safe inundation zone.
    The imminent danger of tsunami occurrence exists along the entire coastline because there are areas along the coast known as "seismic gaps." These are areas where large tsunamigenic earthquakes have historically been reported but currently show no apparent seismic activity yet still hold a high potential for accumulated seismic energy. An example is the more than 270-year "seismic gap" in Callao and Lima, the latter being the capital of Peru.
    Given this risk, the Peruvian Navy, through Directorate of Hydrography and Navigation, serves as Peru's official representative to the Pacific International Tsunami Warning System and is responsible for the Peruvian Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC). Through its technical evaluations, the center is tasked with issuing timely and effective information, alert, and alarm bulletins regarding potential tsunamis to the organizations that comprise the Peruvian National Tsunami Warning System (PTWS). PTWS is also composed of the Geophysical Institute of Peru and the National Institute of Civil Defense. Furthermore, it coordinates with relevant international organizations with the goal of safeguarding the coastal population.
    The PTWC is also responsible for preparing tsunami inundation maps for exposed areas along the coast.
    The National Tsunami Warning System has the following surveillance systems:
