Description
Clean up Nepal has been conducting awareness for students, teachers and staffs and installing sustainable waste management system through the project ‘Zero Waste at Schools’ since 2017. However, COVID-19 significantly disrupted every aspect of human life including the education sector in 2020. So, Clean up Nepal could not conduct its regular Zero Waste at Schools program as all the schools in Nepal were closed. So, it decided to create a digital learning platform, a website for schools. Students and teachers can have access to the course of Zero Waste at Schools and learn about sustainable waste management through this website when they are at home. https://education.cleanupnepal.org.np/
The project was re-strategized in June 2020 to respond the closure of schools. Clean up Nepal team, planned to reach students and teachers through the distance learning platform. The website has focused on two sections: Teachers and students section. Teachers section has the Training of Trainers (ToT) videos and toolkits. The teachers has to enroll themselves in this section. These ToT contains the complete course on sustainable waste management and is the guide for teachers to teach their students on the topic. Similarly, students section targets students from grade 5 to 10 which has activities worksheets, tutorial videos and quiz questions. The students can enroll in their courses and learn about sustainable waste management. The website has been soft launched on December 2020 in the presence of 14 teachers from 11 schools. After the soft launch the website has been beta tested in three phases. In phase I, team members and board members tested the website. Similarly, students from schools in phase II and teachers and parents in phase III has done beta testing of the website. It targets to launch to launch the website by the end of March after which website will be promoted in many schools with the internet accessibility. The project has been funded by Forum Civ and has been conducted jointly with ABC-Active contributions for people and the environment. A creative team of Clean up Nepal has worked to create all the resources in the website.
The website is yet to be launched in the end of March. Once it get launched and is available for schools, teachers and students, it is expected to ease the learnings. Clean up Nepal is also trying to work with government to incorporate the waste management education in the syllabus. So, this website and the Zero Waste at Schools toolkit is expected to act as a complimentary to the existing curriculum. However the feedbacks from beta testing with teachers, parents and students shows that it has already create some impacts on them as the learnings from videos and activity worksheets are very easy. The informative videos has been key to bring behavioural changes in them. Willingness to use the website by principals of schools for their students shows the positive impacts of the project.
The main constraint was to make this website available for the students of government schools as most of them do not have access to internet and technologies. The students of private schools can have easy access though. To involve more number of students from government schools, Clean up Nepal approached government schools management and provided teachers with the soft skills trainings. As the schools re-opened and students are back, now they can easily access to the website through the schools computer lab facilities.
This website is accessible to schools teachers and students. Once we launch the website, it will be available for all the schools in Nepal who have internet excess. The government schools will have free access while private schools who are willing their students and teachers to enroll in the courses have to pay certain fee. This fee will use be used to sustain the program financially. Similarly, the Clean up Nepal team will constantly follow up with the schools regarding the practices they learned and replicating those practices in real life in their schools and home.
The awareness videos were posted in our social media page and You tube channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLHr0YoixWKqjgRDrbVJ6uw FB page: Clean up Nepal
The idea of the project itself was generated in the time of COVID 19 and due to COVID 19 when schools were closed. Since 2017, clean up Nepal used to visit schools and conduct physical awareness sessions. When the schools were closed due to pandemic in 2020, Clean up Nepal came up with the idea of creating distance learning platform where students and teachers can learn from their home even when schools are closed. Now schools are opening and we can run physical classes. But with the website now we can reach more number of schools inside and outside our project area.
