OGP Coalition on Justice

(
Partnership
)
#SDGAction43325
    Description
    Description
    The coalition on justice was launched at the Open Government Partnership's Summit in Ottawa in May 2019. The launch was co-hosted by the Open Government Partnership and the Government of Canada, and organized in association with the Task Force on Justice. It was attended by more than a dozen governments and major international civil society networks.

    The goal of the coalition is to 1) highlight the priority accorded to justice reform within the Open Government Partnership as a critical aspect of improving governance; 2) advocate for an agenda of collective action on people-centered justice, in line with the recommendations of the Pathfinders Task Force on Justice; 3) use the high-level support convened by the coalition as a driver and inspiration for concrete individual action by OGP members, particularly in terms of aligning national action plan commitments with SDG16+ goals.

    Members of the Open Government Partnership - national and local governments - can join the coalition if they agree to 1) Work towards or have a justice commitment in their national action plan; 2) Proactively share information with other countries engaged in justice commitments, including supporting each other in implementation; 3) Participate in meetings of the coalition organized around global events; and 4) Engage in national, regional and global conversations on justice.
    Expected Impact

    Principles of open government are critical to ensure that justice institutions and policies are designed to benefit all communities. The number of justice-related commitments within OGP members action plans is growing, but there are still too few commitments. The purpose of this coalition is to catalyze more commitments that advance people-centered justice services. The expected impact is that more OGP members will include this type of reform or commitment in national action plans which will lead to implementation of concrete services on the ground.
