Modelling tropical cyclone vulnerability and the development of new cyclone insurance coverage programs for housing in Fiji

Description

The number of Fijian homes uninsured for cyclone damage places a heavy burden on the Government of Fiji to finance repairs after cyclones. There is limited availability of homeowners insurance in the Fijian market (current penetration <10%) due to limited compliance with housing regulations. To address this issue and increase the availability of insurance to homeowners in Fiji, the Cyclone Testing Station at James Cook University was commissioned to develop concept designs for digital applications that homeowners in Fiji can use to seek eligibility for cyclone insurance and provide proof of loss following a cyclone to support an insurance claim.
