    Description
    Description
Grenada is currently piloting a number of Ecosystem based adaptation projects throughout the country in order to combat the negative effects of Climate Change .

In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, the Project "Building Capacity for Coastal Ecosystem-based Adaptation in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)" was initiated in Grenada. The Project has been generously funded by the European Commission.

    The project aims to:

Enhance and demonstrate integrated planning tools and technical guidance to assist decision- making and effective stakeholder consultation in the development of coastal EBA interventions.

Support relevant authorities and communities where climate change already places intense pressure on human livelihoods and coastal and marine resources in the selection, planning and implementation of practical EBA measures

Support regional capacity-building and global transfer of good practices and experiences gained to other coastal regions as a means to scale up EBA development and implementation, including informing supportive adaptation policies, strategies and adaptation plans

Through the project a number of coral nurseries have been established in both Grenada and the sister island of Carriacou. Community members have been trained as coral gardeners and have been propagating , tending and outplanting the corals. Manuals have been created for the coral restoration methodology, for training of coral gardeners and also for monitoring and evaluation. The project will also create a strategic plan that will guide the management of the surrounding areas.

Regional sharing has been initiated through the creation of a Network of Permanent Secretaries.

Through the Integrated Climate Change Adaptation Strategies Project, funded by the The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, a community Climate Change Adaptation Fund was established. 29 community projects have been approved with 7 focusing on adaptation options in marine and coastal areas. These include projects focusing on mangrove restoration and revegetation , sustainable methods of fishing and education and education and awareness on coastal monitoring and research.

Under component 2 of the ICCAS project : Climate Resilient Integrated Water/ Coastal Resource Management:

A community co-managed mangrove restoration pilot project has been initiated. Over 1500 mangrove seedlings have been propagated and out-planted in low lying coastal areas vulnerable to the negative aspects of Climate Change such as sea level rise.
The planted mangroves are currently being monitored by community members and show continued growth. Selected members of the community were trained in beekeeping courses in cooperation with the Agriculture Division. These participants have established their hives at the project site and the first mangrove honey has been produced. Other sustainable livelihoods under the project include ecotourism and sustainable charcoal production.
