    Description
    Description

The Empowering Minds Community Library Project is an initiative aimed at establishing a vibrant and accessible library within Wajir County, Kenya. The project aims to provide a space that fosters a love for reading, promotes knowledge sharing, and supports educational and personal growth within the local community.

    OBJECTIVES
Promote Literacy: The primary objective of this project is to improve literacy levels within Wajir County by providing a wide range of reading materials suitable for all ages and interests.
Enhance Education: The project seeks to complement formal education by offering resources and study materials that support students' academic endeavors, thereby contributing to improved educational outcomes.
Cultural Exchange: The library will serve as a hub for cultural exchange, allowing residents to explore various perspectives, traditions, and histories through literature and other media.
Community Engagement: The library will organize events, workshops, and activities that engage community members in discussions, learning sessions, and collaborative projects to foster a sense of belonging and shared knowledge.
Digital Literacy: The project aims to introduce residents to basic digital literacy skills, providing access to computers and the internet, enabling them to navigate the digital world effectively, with the support of our community champions (volunteers).

    Implementation of the Project/Activity

Location Selection: We will identify a suitable location within Wajir County for the library. Considering factors such as accessibility, visibility, and the target audience's proximity.
Resource Acquisition: We will acquire a diverse collection of books, magazines, newspapers, digital resources, and other educational materials catering to different age groups and interests.
Infrastructure Setup: Renovate and furnish the selected location to create a welcoming and comfortable environment conducive to reading and learning.
Technology Integration: Set up computer stations with internet access to facilitate digital learning and research.
Programming and Events: Develop a calendar of events, workshops, reading sessions, and cultural activities to keep the community engaged and encourage regular library visits.
Staffing: Hire trained librarians and support staff to manage the library, assist visitors, and organize events effectively.
Promotion and Outreach: Launch a comprehensive promotional campaign to raise awareness about the library's services and benefits. Collaborate with local schools, community organizations, and media outlets.
Sustainability: Develop a sustainability plan that includes community involvement, potential partnerships, and fundraising strategies to ensure the long-term viability of the library.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

To ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the Empowering Minds Community Library Project, a comprehensive capacity building and technology transfer program will be implemented through:
Regular training workshops will be organized for the library staff to enhance their skills in library management, customer service, event organization, and community engagement.
A series of digital literacy workshops will be conducted for both library staff and community members. This will include basic computer skills, internet navigation, and online research techniques.
Collaborate with the county government, as well as local institutions and organizations to establish a mentorship program where professionals and experts can share their knowledge and experiences with the community.

Resource Sharing: Implement a knowledge sharing platform where we can exchange ideas, lessons learnt, and success stories.

    Coordination mechanisms

Climate and Health Connect will work with local leadership (MCA, Ward administrator, Chief and Assistant chief) to establish a library committee that will oversee the management and running of the library. We will utilise our community champions (currently 10 in number) who will be trained and offer their services in teaching and library management.
We intend to partner with the County Government of Wajir, to get sponsorship in terms of salaries for two full time employees. The rest of the services will be provided by our team of champions.

    Evaluation

We will evaluate the number of people who access the library by implementing a sign in protocol, where anyone who accesses the library must give their name . We will analyse the changes in number of people who access the library. We will also conduct periodic reading competitions to assess the changes in reading abilities over time. We will conduct surveys and feedback sessions to gather insights from community members about their experiences, preferences, and suggestions for improvements.
