Educating the Orphaned Girl

    This initiative targets 50 girls aged between 5 to 18 years old for education support from kindergarten/nursery through primary to secondary school and tertiary institutions. Specifically the initiative will support girls whose parents died in combat, girls whose mothers died as a result of sexual- gender based violence e.g. rape, or infected by HIV/AIDS during/after forced sex, and orphaned girls of separated or divorced couples. The main objective is to ensure improvement in literacy levels among girls and women that is necessary facilitate equal inclusion and participation in all aspects of life.
    Expected Impact

    The initiative will be officially conceived on the date of the first (inception) meeting with all key stakeholders. During this meeting, the objective of the project will be communicated to all members and the implementation team will be formed awaiting orientation on their roles and responsibilities during the following meeting. Mapping of the beneficiaries starts concurrently with resource mobilization. When resources become available communication will be made regarding the commencement of the initiative, and also, a selection criteria will be established to ensure that actual orphans, but not those camouflaged as orphans are identified and recruited for assistance. Successful beneficiaries through their guardians/caregivers are notified and allowed grace period to prepare for the journey. Selection of schools to admit these orphans is done and payment of all related costs is completed and enrollment kicks off. There will also be regular visits to the homes and schools where the orphans live or study to track progress, identify challenges and suggest recommendations. Narrative and financial reports will be compiled and submitted to donors and any body who has donated in-kind or cash to the cause/initiative.

    Capacity

    All members of the implementation team will be trained on their specific roles and duties. This training will be conducted locally (i.e. in-house) with the help of an external consultant or expert in particular areas of need. The board will also be trained on how it can monitor and oversee the implementation of the initiative and provide guidance where necessary. Three laptop computers and two desktops will be purchased will all necessary programmes and software installed on them. Where need arises, some personnel will also be trained on how to use some computer programmes.

    Governed

    Action for Peace and Economic Development will be the lead agency of the initiative while utilizing the expertise of some staff of PCO and AGA to render expert services such as resource mobilization, identifying and recruiting the beneficiaries. The gender ministry through a representative, as well as the education departments will authorize and grant official permission for the initiative to proceed and will further provide access to data on statistics of girls who are orphans and/or disadvantaged. A committee will be established comprising of team leader, project manager, finance manager, resource mobilizer/fundraiser, two representatives (a lady and man) of the guardians of these orphans, and a board consisting of community members (including opinion leaders, area chiefs, educationists, policy-makers, women/child rights activists, and representatives of faith-based groups. Close coordination and regular meetings will be prioritized to ensure systematic and efficient implementation of this initiative. The committee, guided by the team leader and external consultant will work to ensure that relevant systems and policies are put in place to guide the committee members in executing their duties and ensure compliance with ethical principles and standards, especially the "Do No Harm" principle. Throughout the implementation phases, there will be monitoring and evaluation (M&E) which will be done with the help of an external M&E specialist together with the project manager.
