MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT FOR ARTIFICIAL REEFS: In parts of the ocean, large structures must be removed when they are no longer functional or when they meet pre-agreed removal dates. These international obligations stem from the Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (“the OSPAR Convention”).
For this situation, we developed a new, biodegradable artificial reef material for the 2020 TKI Wind op Zee and De Rijke Noordzee challenge “The Perfect Artificial Reef”. This material is completely natural and can be formulated with a programed life of 10-100 years
RECYCLED MATERIALS FOR ARTIFICIAL REEFS: Outside OSPAR areas, Fizzy Transition Ventures are further developing our laminated structural material called SynCoral. It’s made almost entirely from recycled materials (~97% depending on application) and is non-toxic. SynCoral has a carbon footprint near zero and is a satisfactory replacement for most Portland-based concrete structures having similar compressive and flexural strengths.
The surface chemistry of SynCoral uses a stand-alone surface application called “Compound 7”. In early trials it greatly improved coral transplant success, planulae settlement rates, and it sped coral reef recovery. “Compound 7” is designed to improve early coral growth via induced chemical changes in the coral polyp’s soluble organic matrix and increase photosynthesis in developing tissue. We believe that the demonstrated higher rate of planulae settlement is the result of chemical cues giving treated surfaces a “head start” and improved coral cover over time of about 12%.
BUILDING BLOCKS FOR ECO2REEFS: These projects are forerunners of our ECO2Reef Systems development that connects restored coastal ecosystems with artificial reefs to increase food security, biodiversity, biomass, and CO2 sequestration. Fizzy Transition Ventures plan to develop extensive artificial reef systems in addition to restoring natural coral reefs. Creating viable coral reefs in new locations can reduce poverty for local communities while offering significant support to this threatened ecosystem.
ONGOING PROJECTS: Arrangements have been made with the Marine Park and Resource Management Division of the Department of Fisheries, Malaysia to test our biodegradable reef material and further refine “Compound 7” in tropical waters from late 2022 through 2025. There is scope for refining “Compound 7” to improve its characteristics to meet the differing requirements for natural settlement and for transplanting for restoration. Both controlled laboratory experiments (Penang, Malaysia) and field trials (Pulau Payar Marine Park) are planned for variations of “Compound 7”. Results will be jointly published in an appropriate journal.
These projects add to the successful preliminary field testing of “Compound 7” at Pulau Perhentian Marine Park from 2018 through 2020. Comparisons of coral survival on the Malaysian East Coast found the monthly mortality rates of “Compound 7” transplanted fragments (0.9%, n=200) to be significantly less (p<0.01) than the mortality rates for Reef Check Malaysia (4.3%, n> 3,500). Survival appears to have been ca. 40% per year better with “Compound 7”. This could greatly improve the efficiency of reef restoration by reducing the initial number of transplants required, the transplanting density, and the need for follow-up efforts that replace dead corals.
