Description
Portugal has established a Satellite Account for the Ocean integrated into Portuguese official statistics, which is an advantage to support decision making and public policies that need to find balance between social-economic and environmental.
Portugal is developing an assessment of marine ecosystem services in an ‘ecological accounting’ way to implement an Account for Marine Ecosystem Services at national level and is going to develop a case study, in close cooperation with the Global Ocean Account Partnership (GOAP), to develop a social account for ocean economy. Countries worldwide present different realities and the social dimension of ocean accounts need to be developed, tested and compared with other realities. Furthermore, monitoring, at different levels, to measure the impact of public policies is essential to ensure proper implementation throughout the territory and analyse performance and impact. Expected results: (i) To have a useful tool for coordinating and monitoring marine and maritime public policies; (ii) To know the value of ocean economy within the whole economy; (iii) To integrate the ecosystem component analysis in the accounts; (iii) To integrate the social component analysis in the accounts.
