Indonesia to Restore the Pristine Raja Ampat Reefs Destroyed by Caledonia Sky Cruise Vessel
Achievement at a glance
a. The Government of Indonesia has carried out monitoring of damage to coral reef ecosystems due to the wreckage of the Caledonian Sky Cruise Ship in Raja Ampat Regency. The last damage monitoring was carried out on December 18, 2018, the results of the monitoring will be input to carry out activities that will be implemented in 2019-2020.b. The Government of Indonesia allocates a budget for the restoration of damage to coral reef ecosystems in several priority areas, but because of the large number of areas that must be restored so that not all regions can be rehabilitated.
c. For the Raja Ampat area, an inventory of damage to coral reef ecosystems has been proposed in 2020.
Challenges faced in implementation
a. The Government of Indonesia allocates a budget for the restoration of damage to coral reef ecosystems in several priority areas, but because of the large number of areas that must be restored so that not all regions can be rehabilitated.b. So far, handling cases of damage to coral reef ecosystems in Raja Ampat Regency is still under legal process. And there is no compensation paid by the Caledonian Sky operator.
c. The main success in handling the case of Coral Reef Ecosystem Degradation in Raja Ampat Regency is the contribution of Caledonian Sky operators in the implementation of the recovery of the damage to coral reef ecosystems that have occurred. While the results of the recovery will only be seen a few years later.
d. At present, the challenge faced is the problem of budget constraints and human resources. Degradation to coral reef ecosystems in Raja Ampat is one of the priorities for the rehabilitation of the same ecosystem in many other coral reef ecosystems degradation in Indonesia.
