Progress report for
Science to Support SDG-14 Goals
Achievement at a glance
SCOR has completed its four commitments:1. Publication of four eLectures on radioactivity in the ocean (see https://aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/loe2.10010, https://aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/loe2.10009, https://aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/loe2.10008, https://aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/loe2.10007)
2. Publication of 2017 GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product (see http://geotraces.org/dp/idp2017)
3. Funding of two POGO-SCOR Fellows in 2017, 2018, and 2019 (see http://www.ocean-partners.org/fellowships-2017, http://www.ocean-partners.org/pogo-scor-fellowships-2018, http://www.ocean-partners.org/pogo-scor-fellows-2019)
4. Deployment of 7 SCOR Visiting Scholars in 2017, 7 Visiting Scholars in 2018, and 6 Visiting Scholars in 2019 (see http://www.scor-int.org/SCOR_CB/Scholars%20for%202009-2019.pdf).
Challenges faced in implementation
NoneBeneficiaries
The beneficiaries of these actions are students and early-career scientists in developing countries who learned methods related to measuring trace elements and isotopes in the ocean, were supported to learn methods of ocean observations to help implement the Global Ocean Observing System, and received mentoring from professors in their home institutions.
Actions
1. Publishing eLectures on radioactivity in the ocean so that students (and the public) can receive authoritative information on this topic.2. Releasing the 2017 GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product, which can be used to better understand trace elements and isotopes in the ocean and was used as one of the teaching tools for the 2019 GEOTRACES Summer School.
3. Supporting two early-career scientists to participate in the POGO-SCOR Fellowship program
4. Sending SCOR Visiting Scholars to Angola, Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ecuador, Indonesia, Iran, Mauritius, Morocco, and Mozambique to teach and mentor.
