Science and awareness: a mediterranean connection against marine litter
Achievement at a glance
Legambiente and the University of Siena are pursuing their commitment to enforce the link between scientific research and awareness raising activities on the topic of marine litter in the Mediterranean sea. Were finding several moments to share experience and talk about the marine litter problem using the scientific data, citizen science and information campaigns.<br>
<br>Just few examples among other facts: in the summer of 2017, within the Legambientes campaign Goletta Verde, University of Siena and Legambiente have carried out the collection of macroplastic samples, in particular sheetlike user plastics, along the entire navigation route all around Italian coasts. Data for every sample have been registered, including the percent of biofouling covering and ageing. Samples have being analyzed by the University of Siena to evaluate the type of plastics collected and the concentrations of environmental contaminants released or absorbed to floating large plastics items. With the occasion of media exposure several interviews on this commitment has been released about this collaboration. In summer 2017, also the Vele spiegate project has been accomplish with his clean up events, monitoring and awareness campaign, and we're preparing the 2018 edition.

<br>Most recently University of Siena joined Legambientes appeal, done with other NGOs, asking for banning microbeads in cosmetics in Italy, now the ban is law in Italy.
