Progress report for
PATENTSCOPE
Achievement at a glance
WIPO added the national collections of the Republic of Korea, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Tunisia, and Germany to the PATENTSCOPE database, which provides access to the international Patent Cooperation Treaty applications. Following these additions, the PATENTSCOPE database now provides access to over 50 million patent documents and access to data from all five of the IP5 offices. Further, WIPO implemented the machine translation of Chinese descriptions and claims with WIPO Translate, as well as an Arabic version of the complete interface of PATENTSCOPE, thus further expanding the easiness of use and appeal of the program for SIDS. PATENTSCOPE has the patent collections from three SIDS countries: Cuba (added in 2008), Dominican Republic (added in 2008), and Bahrain (added in 2013).Challenges faced in implementation
Sufficiency of resources to actively contact SIDS patent offices to enquire their willingness to participate in PATENTSCOPE, leading to relative scarcity of SIDS patent collections.Next Steps
Encouraging SIDS to add their national data to PATENTSCOPE and continue to make the database more accessible and comprehensive.Beneficiaries
Citizens of SIDS countries, particularly the inventors, innovators, and businesses, in addition to the national governments and patent offices.
