The proposal for the establishment of the Mar Tropical de Grau National Reserve was prepared under a participatory process, presenting the preliminary file to the main stakeholders and holding meetings with government sectors and institutions, regional and local authorities, and different representatives of fishermen's associations in both the Tumbes and Piura Regions, tourism operators, and civil societies to whom the proposal was presented. This document was submitted to the Ministry of Environment for evaluation and was approved by Supreme Decree N°003-2024-MINAM on April 24, 2024, thus establishing the new Mar Tropical de Grau National Reserve. This new Natural Protected Area is located between the coasts of the regions of Piura and Tumbes, and covers four sectors: Isla Foca (insular ecosystem of the Guayaquil ecoregion), Cabo Blanco-El Ñuro (rocky reef ecosystem), Arrecifes de Punta Sal (rocky reef ecosystem ofThis new National Reserve will conserve a representative sample of the ecosystems of the Peruvian Tropical Sea and the tropical-temperate transition zone, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and contributing to the country's compliance with international commitments for the protection of our marine ecosystem.
