Background
The UN 2023 Water Conference is the Midterm Comprehensive Review of the implementation of the UN Decade for Action Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018 – 2028. The UN 2023 Water Conference is scheduled to take place at UN Headquarters in New York from 22 to 24 March 2023. It is the first UN Conference that focuses on water since 1977 and is a pivotal moment to accelerate water action to achieve not only Sustainable Development Goal 6 on water and sanitation, but also frameworks such as the Paris Agreement, the Sendai Framework and Our Common Agenda. Co-hosted by the Governments of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs serving as the Conference Secretariat, with the support of UN-Water, the UN 2023 Water Conference aims to bring together Member States, the UN System, civil society and other stakeholders to achieve the sorely needed progress on water-related goals and targets.
The briefing was co-hosted by Mr. Li Junhua, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General of the UN 2023 Water Conference, and Mr. Gilbert F. Houngbo, Chair of UN-Water and Director-General of International Labour Organization.
More than 100 ECESA Plus Principals joined the meeting. The Conference Secretary-General briefed the principals on the preparations for the UN 2023 Water Conference and answered questions from the principals.
