Background
Introduction
Achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will depend on how effectively all stakeholders contribute to its implementation and participate in reviews at all levels. An inclusive and effective architecture for follow-up and review should be built on a strong interaction between governments and non-State actors alike – stakeholders from economic, social and scientific spheres, including policy makers at local and sub-national levels – on the implementation of the Agenda and sharing responsibilities.
As reaffirmed by the Post-2015 Dialogues on Partnerships with the Civil Society, held in Amman in September 2014, engaging all stakeholders, government, media, civil society organizations, including youth, women as well as local communities is the cornerstone for realizing the 2030 Agenda. It was broadly recognized that using a participatory and bottom-up approach to implementation should be a key principle for decision making at local and national levels.
Building upon more than twenty years of multi-stakeholder engagement in sustainable development, achieving the 2030 Agenda will require broad and systematic engagement of all civil society sectors and other relevant stakeholders in order to play a constructive role in supporting the implementation, in full partnership with national and local policy makers, that will deliver results for the poorest, most vulnerable and those furthest behind.
This activity is made possible thanks to funds granted by the European Commission to support the SD2015 project for stakeholder engagement in follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda.
Objectives
• To increase Jordanian stakeholders’ awareness of the 2030 Agenda, including understanding of the inter-disciplinary nature of the SDGs and how organizations and practitioners must adapt to address sustainable development holistically
• To assess the participation of stakeholders in national task forces and generate practical recommendations for supporting teams and clusters that reflect the inter-disciplinary nature of the SDGs
• To agree on a strategy for better coordinating stakeholders at the national level, without overburdening or duplicating existing structures, and with a focus on sharing information that will support multi-stakeholder partnerships
• To agree on next steps and follow-up.
Methodology
A one-day workshop will be held in Amman to address the aforementioned objectives with key civil society representatives, and other relevant stakeholder networks active throughout the country. The workshop will aim to build national stakeholder capacity to collaborate with the Higher National Committee for Sustainable Development as partners in the planning, implementation and review of sustainable development. It will also be informed by the outcome of the Post-2015 Dialogues on Partnerships with the Civil Society, held in Amman in September 2014, and other relevant consultations such as the Global Forum on Youth, Peace and Security, held in Madaba in August 2015.
Participants
The workshop will aim to accommodate around 75 participants from civil society and other national stakeholders, plus representatives from relevant UN agencies and government Ministries that are working within the Higher National Committee for Sustainable Development. Participants will be identified through active and relevant networks from major groups and other stakeholders, as well as with the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, in accordance with the most contemporary and inclusive practices for follow-up and review at all levels.
