Background
The General Assembly, through its resolution 74/225, invited the Secretary-General, with the support of the relevant United Nations system entities, to convene a high-level dialogue in 2021 to promote the implementation of the energy-related goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in support of the implementation of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (2014–2024) and the Paris Agreement.
The High-level Dialogue on Energy, to be held in September 2021, represents the first global gathering on energy under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly since 1981. It provides a historic opportunity to drive energy transformation in the first years of the SDG Decade of Action and support the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
The Dialogue calls for concrete actions to further accelerate the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 7 in support of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement. Moreover, it is expected that the Dialogue will also feature additional voluntary commitments, including ‘Energy Compacts’, by Member States and non-state actors such as companies, sub-national authorities and other stakeholders.
Energy Compacts Stakeholders Workshop
As part of the preparatory process for the High-level Dialogue on Energy, this Deep-dive Stakeholders Workshop explored opportunities for catalyzing action in the areas of Energy Access, Energy Transition, and Enabling SDGs through just and inclusive energy transitions towards advancing SDG7 by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.
This session included a detailed presentation on the Energy Compacts, followed by a Q&A segment to explore the process of creating and registering an Energy Compact towards the High-level Dialogue on Energy in contribution to SDG 7 and net-zero emissions, and gave voice to some stakeholders showcasing their experiences and lessons learned towards the implementation of the SDG 7.
The Deep-dive Stakeholders Workshop was held virtually on 19 August 2021, at 9:00 – 10:00 AM EDT (New York Time).

The engagement of stakeholders from a broad range of sectors, including non-governmental organizations, civil society, academic institutions, the scientific community, local and regional governments, the private sector and philanthropic organizations will be critical for the successful outcomes of the UN High-Level Dialogue on Energy.
In this regard, UN DESA in collaboration with the Dialogue Co-Chairs have been organizing a series of online briefings in the lead up to the event in order to share information with stakeholders about the Dialogue and its preparatory process, including opportunities for stakeholder participation and contribution.
The first online briefing was held on 17 December 2020.
The second online briefing was held on 3 June 2021.
