5) Jobs and social protection
In 2024, ESCAP continued its support to countries in the implementation of the Action Plan to Strengthen Regional Cooperation on Social Protection to promote more inclusive and comprehensive social protection systems through national stocktaking reports and consultations with government and other stakeholders, adding an additional three countries (Fiji, Nepal, Thailand) to the existing six partner countries (Cambodia, Georgia, Maldives, Mongolia, Philippines, Türkiye). Through the report and consultations, governments identified national recommendations on priority actions and ways forward, as well as emerging issues such as social protection and climate change. ESCAP also built capacity of government and other stakeholders to identify the impact of non-contributory benefits on economic outcomes such as consumption, poverty, inequality as well as the costs of schemes through national workshops on the Social Protection Online Toolbox (SPOT) Simulator. These activities contributed to enhanced regional consensus and peer learning on social protection as expressed at the eighth Committee on Social Development, 8-10 October 2024. ESCAP further fostered interagency and stakeholder engagement through co-conducting the “Associated Event on New Frontiers on Social Protection in a Changing World” with the Issue-based Coalition on Inclusive Economic Growth and Recovery prior to the Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development, 19 February 2024.
