Air/Atmospheric Pollution

Misión Permanente de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela ante las Naciones Unidas
Mr. President,
Firstly, my delegation would like to subscribe to what was expressed by the Pakistanian
representative on behalf of the G-77 and China; however, we would like to make emphasis on
three aspects:
1.- It is required to insist on the need of changing the production and consumption patterns,
trying to eliminate the practices that lead to an energetic waste which has a direct impact on
environmental pollution.
2. - In my country, the environmental pollution problem is a matter of public and community
health which affects all the parties involved. In that sense, education has to be a priority in
order to promote the community?s active and inclusive participation, as well as the private
sector participation based on corporative social responsibility principles, in preventing and
reducing environmental pollution.
3.- Emerging countries technological innovation initiatives aimed to reduce the emission of
polluting substances, such as the elimination of lead in gasoline and the improvement of the
systems for air quality observation and evaluation, have to be supported by the international
community through international cooperation, including South-South cooperation.
Finally, we would like to draw attention to the initiatives being made in our country with
regards to the improvement of the public transportation system through the construction of a
nationwide railroad system, subway systems in the main cities and the elimination of lead in
gasoline.
With regards to the Montreal Protocol, we would like to stress that Venezuela has
accomplished and surpassed the goal of reducing the emissions of these ozone erosive
substances to 3,350 tons a year.
Thank you, Mr. President.
