UNIDO
"The representative of UNIDO reaffirmed the earlier statements of the Chair of the RIM and
ECA that Africa's regional preparation for this CSD cycle has been exemplary in terms of
cooperation between agencies, in particular ECA, UNEP, African Union, African Roundtable on
Sustainable Consumption and Production (ARSCP) and others and resulted in sharing of good
practices and knowledge. He further reinforced that the themes under review are closely
interrelated. The efficient and safe use of materials and chemicals is at the core of sustainble
consumption and production and requires sustainable mining and transport. UNIDO, by its
mandate, is focused on supporting enterprises to deliver goods and services in a resource
efficient and clean manner, and delegates are therefore encouraged to consider how
entrepreneurs can be supported to realise the policy aims and targets set for the themes under
discussion. He confirmed the widening policy gap in particular in waste and chemicals
management, which in UNIDO's view points to the need to scale-up and mainstream best
practices proven by pilot and demonstraiton projects completed in recent years. The ARSCP,
National Cleaner Production Centres and other centres (including those established under the
Basel Convention), are available to develop and implement projects, programmes and policies
that provide access to best practices and techniques and finance, and create the human and
institutional capacities to utilise these in a manner most beneficial to the national development
priorities".
