South Africa
THIRD ANNUAL MULTI-STAKEHOLDER FORUM ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION FOR THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
South Africa’s input during Session 1 (Impact of Rapid Technological Change on the Achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals)
South Africa thanks the United Nations for hosting this forum, as it reaffirms the role of science, technology and innovation in implementing the SDGs. In order to capitalise on the potential of STI to accelerate development, we need effective platforms for disseminating existing research and innovation. In this regard, the most recent Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development recommended the creation of (i) an African STI multi-stakeholder forum and (ii) the creation of an African platform for research and innovation exchange. South Africa is currently piloting a national platform for research and innovation exchange in the form of the South African SDG Hub (www.SASDGHub.org). This network of online and face-to-face platforms is supported by the Department of Science and Technology. South Africa would gladly share lessons learned with interested partners.
