Major Group: Women
Intervention by Sascha Gabizon, WECF International / Women International for a Common Future
Wed 7 May, morning dialogue session of MGS with Co-chairs
Thank you for the floor, co-chair Korosi
My name is Sascha Gabizon of WECF international, and the Women's Major Group, and I would like to support the presentation made by the Major Group colleague from Sudan speaking on Energy.
I would like to confirm an important point which she mentioned, that the focus area on Energy needs to provide qualifiers, what is meant when it says "clean" or "sustainable" or "modern" energy.
For example, "sustainable biomass", what is meant with that? When the biomass is produced in competition with food, when lots of pesticides are used, when it concerns monocultures, there can be a very negative social and environmental impact, and then this focus area on energy might be give the contrary results from what the SDGs aim at.
We will be glad to provide you with a proposal how such a qualifier could be integrated into the Focus Area document.
Thank you chair
