Major Group: Farmers
STATEMENT
Intervention from the Farmers? Group by
Mr.Leonard Msemakweli, UCA, Uganda
Although food prices are escalating, the farmers are not benefiting at all. The difference between the price paid by the consumers and the price received by the farmers is very big due to constraints such as poor or lack of storage facilities, very bad rural feeder roads, lack of technology to add value to and preserve produce etc..
Consequently, the situation of rising food prices is continuing because there is no response from the supply side since the incentives are not there.
In order to address this situation, governments, development partners and the private sector need to invest in those infrastructural requirements as well on technology transfer. If this is done, we should see more supply from the farmers which will eventually stabilise the prices.
