Major Group: Farmers

Statement by Farmers Major Group On Outcomes
Mr. Chairman,
The outcome document should define a green economy that closes the
gaps in implementing Agenda 21 and CSD-17. Critical in this is
agriculture. Farmers need agriculture to become sustainable and
ensure that they produce enough food to feed all and leave none
malnourished.
To this end, farmers would like the outcome document to emphasize
ways in which science and technology would be harnessed to make
agriculture more knowledge-based and harmonize with the abundant
traditional knowledge that is already available.
On this International Women’s Day, I would also plead on behalf of
women farmers for their secure tenure with appropriate land reform and
lastly place rural development and poverty alleviation on top of the list.
