Development, air pollution/atmosphere, and climate change"

Mr. Chairman;
Based on the decision of the 111 meeting of the Council of the
Permanent Representatives of the Economic Cooperation Organization
(ECO), I have the honor to make the following statement, on behalf of the
Member States of ECO on the activities and programs of the
Organization.
For your information, the Economic Cooperation Organization is a
regional intergovernmental organization devoted to the socio-economic
development of its 10 Member States. Member States of ECO include:
Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan,
Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, with more than 350
million people and covering 7.7 million sq km in central and west Asia .
ECO has formulated and adopted a series of plans and programs,
such as: "Plan of Action on Environment", "Development of ECO
Countries Manufacturing Capabilities of the Equipments Used for New
and Renewable Energies", "ECO Plan of Action for Industrial
Cooperation" along with two Declarations during the First Ministerial
Meeting on Industry in Tehran in 2004, and the Second Ministerial
Meeting on Industry in Istanbul in 2005.
There are several other plans under consideration in ECO, with a
view to achieving the Millennium Development Goals, as scheduled. I
would like to bring the titles of those plans to your kind attention:
1. A Directorate on Sustainable Development. In the Directorate,
some of the important issues including health, poverty alleviation,
human resources are addressed within the context of the three
pillars of sustainable development;
2. Preparation of ECO multi-year program of work on human and
sustainable development;
3. Regional program for capacity enhancement in ECO States for
preparing national sustainable development strategies and
indicators of sustainable development;
4. New and renewable sources of energies;
5. Development and maintenance of pastures in ECO region;
6. ECO regional program for drought management and, in that
framework, establishment of ECO regional center for risk
management of natural disasters, especially drought monitoring
and early warning.
In order to finalize the above mentioned draft proposals and to
enter into the phase of implementation, ECO will welcome cooperation
with the other countries as well as regional and international
organizations, including the Department of the Economic and Social
Affairs of the United Nations.
In conclusion, Mr. Chairman, there are some copies of the
programs and proposals available at the back of the room for the
information of the interested delegations. I would like the summary of
this statement be included in the report of CSD-14.
