Access to information and the Sustainable Development Goals
I’m Stuart Hamilton from The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) and I’m speaking on behalf of the 571 library, development and technology organisations who have signed The Lyon Declaration on Access to Information and Development.
During the 6th meeting of the negotiations last month the IFLA President made an intervention regarding the importance of access to information to development, and we were encouraged by your response which suggested its inclusion in the vision part of the document.
We welcome the Final Draft but continue to believe that the Vision would benefit from a clear reference to the importance of access to information– it is a fundamental pillar of sustainable development and a cross-cutting means of supporting the agenda’s implementation.
In light of this, we would recommend the addition of text to paragraph 8. We suggest including the words ‘A world where everyone has access to information and knowledge, underpinned by universal literacy.’ This would complement the other vision statements, and capture the importance of access to information for the success of our agenda.
Suggested addition
8. In these Goals and targets, we are setting out a supremely ambitious and transformational vision. Poverty eradication in all its forms and dimensions is the overarching priority and central imperative of the Agenda. We envisage a world free of poverty, hunger, disease and want, where all life can thrive. We envisage a world free of fear and violence. A world with equitable and universal access to quality education at all levels and to health care and social protection, where physical, mental and social well-being are assured. [A world where everyone has access to information and knowledge, underpinned by universal literacy]. A world where the right to have access to safe and affordable drinking water is universally realized; where food is sufficient, safe, affordable and nutritious; where there is adequate and accessible sanitation and hygiene. A world where human habitats are safe, resilient and sustainable and where there is universal access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.
