Global Business Alliance
February 19, 2015
Interactive Dialogue with Major Groups and other Stakeholders 19 February, 2015;
10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Trusteeship Council Chamber, UNHQ
Statement by Dr. Igor Runov, Under Secretary-General, International Road Transport Union (IRU)
Good morning. My name is Igor Runov of the International Road Transport Union global spokesman for the road transport industry since 1948. I am speaking for the Global Business Alliance for Post 2015, on behalf of the Business and Industry Major Group.
Due to time limitations, I would like to focus on three areas which from the perspective of business are critical for success of the new Post 2015 agenda:
Economic growth is central to transformative and robust development – countries can only sustain their development if their economies are allowed to grow and flourish, while people can only exit poverty if they can find worthwhile jobs. Economic growth also depends on policy consistency and overall macroeconomic stability.
Rule of law and effective institutions are the bedrock of our economies and societies, without which sustainable development would be impossible. Greater emphasis should be placed on the implementation of laws, across all sectors. But designing good laws is not sufficient in itself. Enforcement is critical in order to uphold rule of law and minimize the risk of bribery and corruption.
And finally, sustainable transport, which is a driver of economic development and international trade. We are extremely encouraged by the recent UN General Assembly Resolution on transport and transit corridors and creation of the UN High-level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport. On our side, we are planning to launch later this year Global Partnership for Sustainable Transport, which will unite efforts of all modes of transport in achieving sustainability of global supply chains in Post 2015 period.
I would like to conclude my presentation by commending the Co-facilitators for an excellent Elements Paper. We fully support the call from member states to arrive at a Declaration that reflects the magnitude, ambition and the transformative change that we all envision for the Post-2015 Development Agenda to be.
