Denmark, Ireland and Norway
Open Working Group Session 13
Statement by Ambassador Ib Petersen, Permanent Representative of Denmark to the UN on behalf of the the Troika of Denmark, Ireland and Norway
19 July 2014
Thank you Mr Co-Chair.
Let me first of all join others by thanking you and Ambassador Korosi for a marvellous job, an outstanding job. For those of us who have been here from the start, it is a special feeling to be at this point. Indeed we are here because of your efforts.
I can actually, on behalf of our troika, agree with the comments of our colleague from Switzerland. But I would also like to go back to what you just said, Mr Co-Chair, that is that the chairs have no intention to reopen the text but simply to submit it for adoption. We would strongly support this approach.
But that is not to say that we do not have concerns on a number of issues in the text. We do feel as well that there are areas where our views and our proposals have not been accommodated and we fail to see why. There are also areas where we succeeded with other delegations to find a meeting of minds and I guess that’s what characterises a process like this and a document as we have now. There has to be a balance and this is a proposal of the Working Group that will now go into the next phase as you have underlined.
So again to reemphasise, we strongly support your intention not to reopen the text but to put it for adoption. To your concrete question, we do not support the proposal from our Nigerian colleague. If one issue is to be reopened, we would like to open the present text for other issues as well and I guess there are other delegations who would like to do the same. We need to have a strong uniform approach here so we do not support that proposal and we support your line.
We have some concerns and I think we have also been flexible on a number of issues and the para referred to by our Nigerian colleague is one of the paragraphs where we have been extremely flexible. Again, our main point is that we do not support the Nigerian proposal and instead support your approach.
