Industrialisation and Promoting equality among nations

• We would like to make a short number of key points on this Focus Area.
• First, in relation to equality among nations, we are very aware of the importance of promoting progress on these issues. Promoting equality between nations, however, requires that we address many issues which are not solely linked to Industrialization and which are not included in this focus area. We feel that multi-lateral and systemic matters, such as those relating to trade or the regulation of global commodity markets, which have been highlighted by many countries, are essential elements of the sustainable development agenda and would be better addressed elsewhere in the framework.
• Second, we find that many of the central issues regarding sustainable industrialization are covered under focus area 8 on sustainable and inclusive economic growth and vice-versa. We feel, however, that there is a better balance between the three pillars of sustainable development in the targets in this Focus Area than in Focus Area 8.
• Third, on the specific targets, we recognize the importance of many of the targets which are relevant for industrialization and economic growth and which contain several positive recommendations for growth whilst mitigating environmental impact, such as targets (d), (e), (f), (g) and (h).
• Fourth, a target promoting research, development and innovation would be important in both this Focus Area and Focus Area 8.
• Finally, we note that little attention is given to the role of women and girls in the targets under this Focus Area.
