Sustainable Development 20 Years on from the Earth Summit: Progress, gaps and strategic guidelines for Latin America and the Caribbean

Publication Year: 2012 Publisher: United Nations

Background

This report was prepared by the UN System agencies, funds and programmes active in Latin America and the Caribbean, under the coordination of ECLAC, as an input on the current debates on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and on a new development paradigm for the region and the world beyond 2015, based on the Rio+20 commitments. The first chapter provides a brief account of the region´s progress towards achievement of the MDGs, focusing on the gaps and estimating the resources needed to close them. The second reviews lessons and experiences in public policy for achieving Goal 1 and sets out guidelines for moving towards more inclusive and integrated social protection systems. The third chapter examines the potential direction of a post-2015 development agenda, weighing the region´s current situation, new challenges and the move towards a sustainable development model.
