Publication Year: 2011 Publisher: Conservation International Brazil

Background

?Green economy: challenges and opportunities? addresses the transition to an economy that is in line with sustainable development

Conservation International Brazil released the new number of its online journal Pol?tica Ambiental on Green economy: challenges and opportunities in July. Containing 18 papers of Brazilian and brazilianists experts, the publication points paths to the transition in Brazil and in the world toward an economic model that is inclusive and sustainable.

The new publication of CI-Brazil makes way to a broad social debate on green economy, which is one of the key issues that will be debated on Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development that will take place in 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.

The 18 papers of the publication approach issues such as social inclusion, the ecosystemic limits to economic activities, valuing and pricing natural resources, payments for ecosystem services and new market and public policy mechanisms, which are capable of promoting the transition to a green economy. Some productive sectors are discussed in more detail, as in the case of agriculture and cattle raising, providing reflections on necessary changes in agricultural policy and legislation in order to build a new development trajectory in the sector.

The authors bring the views of the various social sectors to the debate, such as the academy, private sector, public sector and multilateral organizations, including UNEP, UNDP and ECLAC.

The challenge of moving towards a more egalitarian and sustainable society is, more than ever, on the agenda.
