The roots of the Olympic Movement?s active sustainability engagement can be traced back to the 1992 Earth Summit. When the United Nations (UN) convened that landmark gathering in Rio de Janeiro, it became clear that sport could play a positive role in supporting the quest for an environmentally responsible approach. The Summit was a global catalyst for environmental action ? and the Olympic Movement at large heard and heeded the call.
