Description

The Accelerated Irrigation, Rehabilitation and Development Plan targets a cumulative 400,000 hectares, by 2023, comprising rehabilitation of 71,000 hectares (26 000 ha for smallholder irrigation schemes and 45 000 ha on A1 and A2 farms) and development of 183,000 hectares of new irrigation. The Plan has three components:

(1) Rehabilitation and revitalisation of the over 450 irrigation schemes in communal areas, on 26,000 hectares and a concomitant farmer capacitation, governance overhaul and business model transformation to ensure viability and assure sustainability of these irrigation schemes.

(2) The rehabilitation and revitalisation of the 45,000 hectares, on A1 and A2 farms, through regulatory reforms, governance improvement, business transformation and farmers capacitation.

(3) New irrigation development will comprise new public and private sector, Lowveld Green Zone Irrigation Development on 100,000 hectares, and various schemes and projects linked to dams in communal and resettlement areas on 83,000 hectares.
