Description
The Swedish government strengthen the national research program on seas and water with 10 million SEK in 2025, followed by an estimated 10 million SEK in 2026, 10 million SEK in 2027, and 15 million SEK in 2028 for this purpose.
Within the framework of the program, additional focus will be placed on enhancing knowledge about water systems from source to sea, in line with the government bill "A Living Sea – Increased Protection, Reduced Eutrophication, and Sustainable Fishing" (prop. 2023/24:156). The additional support also follows upon the Government bill “Research and Innovation for the Future, Curiosity, and Utility” (prop. 2024/25:60). The aim of additional support is to counteract eutrophication and the spread of hazardous substances, ensure safe access to water of the right quantity and quality, and to benefit and protect biodiversity, which includes strengthened knowledge about interactions between species and their ecosystem effects in a changing climate in areas such as the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. The scientific basis needs to be strengthened with knowledge bases and tools for targeted marine and water management, effective monitoring, and follow-up of measures. The program serves as scientific support for strategic innovation programs aimed at accelerating the conversion of knowledge into application. Furthermore, the program enables active participation in the UN Decade of Ocean Science through the utilization of marine research. The initiative aligns with the EU's Vision for Global Water Resilience 2050, which aims to balance water needs and availability in relation to digitization, energy, food, health, and ecosystems.
