Re-utilization of ocean plastics

    Description
    Description
In 2011, nearly 300 million tonnes of plastics were produced around the world. In Europe alone, 25 million tonnes of plastics reach their end -of-life each year. And a portion of these plastics end up in the ocean jeopardizing the marine ecology.

The goal of this initiative is to promote a sustainable use and management of the ocean plastics and advocate for sustainable plastics. The general objectives of this initiative are to reduce the amount of plastics entering the ocean and promote the re-utilization of used nets in a more sustainable ways.
    Implementation of the Project/Activity

Ocean plastics are divided into 2 groups: the used fishing nets and the other plastics found in the ocean or on the beaches.
    - The expert team in PIDC will collect the used fishing nets at the ports and re-granulate from the washed, sorted and segmented nets. Due to the different physical properties of Nylon products, technical adjustments are required at the re-granulation stage. By the end of this initiative, two readily applicable utilization of the recycled fishing nets will be developed.
    - PIDC will collect PET bottles from beach clean-ups, re-condition the recovered ocean plastics and develop one applicable utilization.
    - Promote “Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) Plastics Verification” and showcase the plastics recycling system at an international Conference.
