    Description
    Las redes fantasmas son aquellos aparejos de pesca perdidos o descartados en los fondos marinos causando alteraciones en el ecosistema, las especies marinas y perjudicando las pesqueras de importancia económica de las comunidades costeras donde se encuentran.
    En este sentido, La Autoridad de los Recursos Acuáticos de Panamá a través de la Dirección de Ordenación y Manejo Integral ha realizado una propuesta de Manejo Integral para la Extracción y Recolección de la Basura Marina específicamente Redes Fantasmas mediante un Proceso Participativo (comunidad, pescadores artesanales, empresa privada y la ARAP) en diversas comunidades pesqueras del país. Este proyecto se ha ejecutado desde el 2009 en caladeros pesqueros de la Provincia de Los Santos y Chiriquí. En el 2015 se continuó con el monitoreo de este Proyecto en el área de Isla Iguana, Provincia de Los Santos. Para el 2016 se realizaron extracciones en las Provincias de Darién, Coclé y Herrera. Como complemento al Proyecto, se realizó una gira al Parque Nacional Coiba donde se logró extraer un paño de red de nylon, en Isla Canales Afuera. Para el 2017 se tiene estipulado realizar giras de extracción de redes en las provincias de Panamá y Veraguas. Para fortalecer la formación de habilidades y capacidades del trabajo submarino en la Institución se necesita realizar una buena gestión en la extracción y manejo de las redes fantasmas mediante la adquisición o perfección de conocimientos y técnicas de buceo, que permitan contribuir a la mitigación del problema de uso y descarte de los distintos artes de pesca.
    El proyecto a través del trabajo inter-institucional y colaborativo con otros actores del sector pesquero, a diseñar un Plan de Acción Nacional para las Redes Fantasmas que incluya también un plan de manejo para la recolección y limpieza de la basura marina y la recuperación de las zonas de interés pesquero. Para complementar estas actividades de extracción se ha dispuesto agregar nuevos componentes que sean de beneficio para el proyecto como lo ser el Censo de la flota pesquera, caracterización de artes de pesca y su actividad en la República de Panamá y as aportar insumos al Plan de Acción Nacional para las redes fantasmas ser necesario tener conocimiento detallado de la actividad pesqueras, para lo que se requiere generar un censo preciso sobre la actividad pesquera y las características operativas; Esto permitir evaluar la situación de contaminación por la basura marina y redes fantasmas de forma tal que contribuya a estimar y dimensionar el problema real de la pesca fantasma.
