Indigenous Knowledge Bank

    Description
    Description
    Global objective: To promote local knowledge that is relevant to the resolution of problems related to climate change for a better adaptation of vulnerable communities and sustainable development.

    The specific objectives are:

    • Identify and document local knowledge in the field of adaptation and vulnerability;

    • Improve the database and create a framework of information exchange on local knowledge in climate and development;

    • Contribute to bridge the "gap" between local and scientific knowledge to better promote integration of local knowledge into adaptation plans and strategies to climate change at different levels for sustainable development.

    Expected Impact

    To achieve the objectives, a robust method was defined.

• Literature review, development of concept notes and consultation of NGOs and CBOs/CSOs networks able to contribute to the process.

• Gather knowledge from various ecosystems. Three types of ecosystems (Arid/ semi-Arid, marine and coastal zones, river valleys and floodplains) are chosen in order to analyze community practices to adapt to climate change and develop sustainable livelihoods. During field surveys, data collection tools such as interviews, focus groups, historical profiles and stakeholder consultations help to evaluate the vulnerability and adaptation capacity of communities. Best practices are identified, documented and validated.

• What is new and central to the ENDA Indigenous Knowledge Bank is that it aims not only to collect knowledge but to usefully and strategically share and deploy such knowledge. A Local/indigenous knowledge platform is developed.

• Monitoring and Evaluation: A steering committee is created to give advices and to evaluate the implementation process. An independent evaluation of the action has been undertaken. The Terms of Reference for the evaluation have been developed jointly by ENDA and UNITAR

Capacity

    Local practices documented enable communities to cope with climate risks and improve their living conditions. Significant results were obtained with 36 documented best practices with local communities in West Africa.

The bilingual (English and French) knowledge exchange platform is developed and closely monitored. Local knowledge papers are available online. The platform will strengthen capacity of local communities, NGOs, researchers and policy to identify adaptation options using ENDA’s Indigenous Knowledge Base.

Governed

    This concerns the implementation of specific Action through joint collaboration of the Environment and Development Action in the Third World (ENDA TM), the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and the Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND) under the framework agreement “Capacity Development for Adaptation to Climate Change and GHG Mitigation” (C3D+) co-funded by the European Commission, the Austrian Development Cooperation and the Government of Switzerland.

ENDA will act as the implementing Partner of the Action and issue sub-contracts to other Partners.

At local level the main partners are The Institute of Environment and Agricultural Research (INERA), the National Center for Scientific and Technological Research (CNRST) in Burkina Faso, The National Agency of Maritime and Civil Aviation (ANACIM) in Senegal.
