I am Karabo Initiative

    Description
    Description
    The goal of the #I am Karabo initiative is to create a platform and opportunities for South Africans to heal from gender-based violence. The Movement that seeks to:

    * create awareness on through advocacy using arts such as drama, music and dance
    * conduct extensive research on factors that enable it to thrive in communities
    * design and develop life skills programmes for schools and tertiary institutions
    * lobby government to change curriculum of public servants involved in supporting victims, for example, the nurses and police
    * offer training and support at a preventive, detective and corrective levels
    Expected Impact

    This initiative has four pillars of implementation:

1. There is an Advocacy and Community Mobilisation Team. They are responsible for developing music, drama, dance routines and poems and performing these to school children to create awareness on gender-based violence. For example, there is a drama that is performed in school on the effects of fatherlessness on children. The drama is debriefed as learners deal with their emotional issues with support from Social Workers. The initiative has developed a poem and a song that deal with gender-based violence. Talks are given to groups of people and there is a Facebook Page and a Website. The initiative has plans to develop TV programmes.

2. There is a Research and Innovation Team that is responsible for conducting research on the subject and partnering with universities. It is important for us as a country to have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of gender-based violence in order to advise government and to respond appropriately.

3. There is a Curriculum Design and Development Team that designs new programmes but also advises government on which programmes need to be revised to avoid secondary trauma for victims of gender-based violence.

4. There is a Training and Support Team that is responsible for delivering training where necessary and to support victims in accordance with their needs. This is sometimes done in partnership with other organisations.

    Capacity

    Capacity building forms and integral part of the initiative. At its infancy this initiative still relies on face-to-face training and support. However, the plan is to move to the use of a blended learning approach technology will be used to delivery programmes through the development of an e-learning platform. This will increase the reach of the programmes delivered under this initiative.

It is also our plan to use hand held devices such the cell phones to deliver messages and training programmes. Currently, as a country data is very expensive and limits the use of technology in training and support.

The initiative plans to train Teachers, Parents and Volunteers in delivering life skills programmes that are meant to assist in preventing gender-based violence. the focus of the initiative is PREVENTION.

Technology such as TV is ideal to reach as many people s possible but developing such programmes have proved to be a challenge due to lack of adequate financial resources. There is a lot of content and the need can never be over estimated.

    Governed

    This initiative is governed by a Board of Directors who are responsible for providing direction to the initiative. There are five board members who consist of:

* a representative from the religious sector
* a human resource expert
* a businesswoman
* a government representative and
* a representative from the private sector

This cross section of people is responsible for policy development and provide oversight to the initiative. They also have to assist with fundraising and ensuring that the funds are properly managed and used in accordance with the goals and objectives of the initiative. This is done in line with the King IV Code of Good Governance.
