Engaging Parliamentarians as Advocates with civil society to progress SRHR and ICPD in the Pacific SIDS
AFPPD (Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development)
#SDGAction40050
Description
The partnership will be achieved through successfully undertaking the post-election modules in partnership parliaments. AFPPD and IPPF EASEOR have created this partnership under our joint MOU. We also undertake the module at the express invitation of parliaments. As AFPPD covers all parliaments within the UN APRO region, a MOU between AFPPD and IPPF SARO, enable us to approach our existing partnership with the Maldives Parliament to undertake the module there and other SIDS related parliaments such as Singapore, Australia, Japan and New Zealand.
We have trialled a Post Election module for Parliamentarians already in the Tongan Parliament and are scheduling further modules with parliamentarians in the Cook Islands Parliament, Kiribati, Fiji and Solomons. The results of the Tongan trial showed a commitment from parliamentarians and civil society to work together to progress ICPD and SRHR outcomes, particularly in relation to legislation, resources and commitment at international levels.By working with the UNDP parliamentary capacity building team at the Tongan Parliament, as well as UNFPA and other partners, we also built the capacity of the parliamentary committee secretariat, enabling transfer of capacity building beyond the election cycle.
