Description
Lobitos is an old fishing and oil town that dates back to the early 1900s. In the 1960s the oil companies were nationalized by a military government and Lobitos was turned into a military camp. Since then the town fell into disrepair and became a "ghost town". In the late 1990s and early 2000s an El Niño Phenomenon brought sand to the beach shores and created more than 9 world class wave breaks ideal for surfing. Since then surfers from around the world have been visiting Lobitos to surf and relax. This has created a new economy for the local inhabitants and business owners. However, this boom in tourism has brought foreign investment and growth that Lobitos was not prepared for, risking the preservation of the natural resources and beauty. EcoSwell arrived in Lobitos in July 2014 with the aim of guiding the town and all the stakeholders through a sustainable path, conserving and making sustainable use of the abundant natural resource present. By making Lobitos a World Surfing Reserve and completing all the necessary requirements, EcoSwell can ensure the conservation of the ocean and coastal ecosystem and guarantee the sustainable economic well being of the community through surf tourism.
