Adapting forest policies to climate change in the MENA region for optimizing the sustainable provision of Mediterranean forests' goods and services for populations.
Description
-Better intersectoral cooperation enables the committed countries to better use their forests as a solution to mitigate climate
change and also to adapt territories and societies to its effects.
-Forests of the MENA region play a bigger role in the green economy by creating sustainable jobs and added value.
-The awareness of the general public regarding the importance of forests' goods and services has increased and the MENA forest sector can rely on the support of the civil society.
In the framework of the Collaborative Partnership on Mediterranean Forests (CPMF), initiatives will drive changes towards this commitment. Among them two projects have been requested and developed by the countries involved in the CPMF:
1.The regional project « Adapting Forest Policy Conditions to Climate Change in the MENA Region with the support of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), with four components :
1)Reinforcing capacities of forest administrations regarding climate change
2)Supporting inter-institutional relations with other sectors
3)Developing communication, information and awareness-raising in the general public
4)Strengthening mobilization of external support and partnerships
2.The regional project « Optimizing the production of goods and services by Mediterranean forests in the context of global changes' with the financial support of the French Development Agency (AFD) and the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM), and the operational support of FAO and Plan Bleu, with five components :
1)Supporting decision and management regarding the vulnerability of Mediterranean forests to global change
2)Valuing the economic and social values of goods and services provided by Mediterranean forests
