Progress report for
Underwater Acoustic Monitoring of Marine Megafauna within Coastal Waters of Singapore
Achievement at a glance
A cloud-enabled PAM, hydrophone array with 24/7 acoustic recording and acoustic detector which triggers camera for photographic ground truth, as well as a single-hydrophone recorder, were installed at the southern islands of Singapore to conduct passive acoustic monitoring of dolphins.Feasibility study of passive acoustic detection of dugong was started in Oct 2021. Two recorder stations have been set up at Chek Jawa inter-tidal zone and some dugong acoustic events were detected, pending further verifications to confirm their origin.
Some of the milestones to-date include:
- Successful application of machine-learning detection algorithms on locally collected acoustic data.
- Derived preliminary understandings of the statistics of detections over space and time around Southern Islands.
- Comprehensive suite of cloud services developed to support the operations of the PAM system.
- PAM deployment site studied and surveyed for deployment
Challenges faced in implementation
