Progress report for
Sweden contributes 3 million SEK (ca 300 000 USD) in 2022 to the Marine Regions Forum
Achievement at a glance
The contribution seeks to support both the preparation and execution of the second Marine Regions Forum (MRF) in the Western Indian Ocean, under the Partnership for Regional Ocean Governance (PROG). This funding will be used to enhance collaboration and coordination across the region, connect local efforts to the global stage, and foster exchanges between marine regions. A key priority is strengthening regional cooperation on marine environmental issues, particularly through regional sea conventions, to improve environmental conditions and secure livelihoods for vulnerable communities. The partnership also focuses on capacity building, knowledge enhancement, and the development of methodologies for marine protection and management in developing countries. This aligns with the government’s priorities following the UN Ocean Conference 2017 and contributes to achieving several targets under SDG 14.Short-term goals: Implementation of initiatives such as the Marine Regions Forum 2023.
Long-term goal: To reinforce regional marine environmental cooperation in support of SDG 14, thereby facilitating active participation from developing countries and enhancing capacity building in these nations, with a focus on LDCs and SIDS.
The initiative has contributed to building capacity and enhancing skills for the development of a sustainable blue economy and the protection of marine resources in developing countries, with particular emphasis on East Africa.
Next Steps
....Beneficiaries
Developing countries: Especially the least developed countries (LDC) and small island developing states (SIDS), which will benefit from capacity building and skill enhancement in marine protection and management. Impoverished communities: These communities will benefit from improved environmental conditions and secured livelihoods through strengthened regional cooperation on marine environmental issues. Regions in the Western Indian Ocean: These regions will benefit from enhanced coordination and collaboration, as well as connections to global levels and exchanges between marine regions. Global marine regions: Through exchange and cooperation, other marine regions will also benefit from the experiences and methods developed within this initiative.
Actions
Through following measures, we can ensure that marine resources are managed sustainably and effectively, benefiting both the environment and the communities that depend on these resources.Regional conferences: These conferences bring together experts and stakeholders from various marine regions to discuss and share best practices in ocean management. This promotes collaboration and learning between regions.
Network building: By creating and strengthening networks between different marine regions, beneficiaries can benefit from increased communication and cooperation, leading to better management of marine resources.
Expert groups: The formation of expert groups in ocean management ensures that specialized knowledge and experience are utilized to develop and implement effective management strategies.
Knowledge exchange: Facilitating knowledge exchange between regions and at global forums allows beneficiaries to access the latest research and innovative solutions in ocean management.
