Sustainable Economic Development of Pacific Islands Fisheries
Achievement at a glance
Support and funding was provided to Pacific regional agencies to deliver advice, policy support, system development and capacity building in leadership, fisheries management, science and monitoring, control and surveillance.Regional fisheries bodies have agreed one of the management strategies for tuna species through the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission. Regional agency support both through capacity building and technical analysis was critical for this achievement.
Advice and capacity building support has resulted in improved coastal fisheries management laws and regulations, incorporating community based management, at national and local levels.
Challenges faced in implementation
Technical capacity within Pacific Island counties and political agreement will continue to be challenges in achieving long term sustainable fisheries.Next Steps
Development of a multi-partner portfolio to address the next critical steps in fisheries leadership, management, science and MCS was agreed in 2024. The portfolio will also focus on enchancing career pathways for fisheries management, science and compliance practitioners from within the region. Support for coastal fisheries will be addressed through ongoing support to regional technical agency.Beneficiaries
