Supporting FISHGOV.2 in order to improve food security, livelihoods and wealth creation in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in Africa
Achievement at a glance
The project has achieved several key milestones, including the development of an African Fisheries and Aquaculture Database, and the training of seven African Union (AU) member States on the use of the database. It has supported the alignment of national fisheries and aquaculture policies with the Policy Framework and Reform Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Africa (PFRS) in several countries. It has facilitated the development of regional fisheries and aquaculture policies. An effective contribution was made to strengthen the capacity of Regional Economic Commissions and Regional Fisheries Bodies and to establish 10 Centres of Excellence to provide scientific advice to Member States and AU alike.Furthermore, the project has contributed to the development of the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) Post-Malabo Agenda.

The direct beneficiaries are the African Union Member States, RECs, and Regional Fisheries Bodies, which receive technical assistance, capacity building, and support for policy development and implementation.
The indirect beneficiaries are the fish farmers, fish traders, and other stakeholders in the fisheries and aquaculture sector, who benefit from improved policy and regulatory frameworks, increased investment, and better access to markets and services. Additionally, consumers of fish and fish products also benefit from improved food security and nutrition.
