Progress report for
Strengthen research and capacity building in the fields of fish health and bio security in developing countries
Achievement at a glance
This commitment encompasses several agreements that Norway has with FAO, WorldFIsh and various universities and research institutions. Through WorldFish and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, Norway supports two initiatives to advance fish feed production (FASA project) and build capacity in fish health and biosecurity (AHA project). The FASA project aims to improve food security, increase incomes, and reduce waste by researching local feed ingredients, integrating gender-sensitive approaches, and collaborating with policymakers for a more equitable aquaculture sector. For instance, in Nigeria FASA has identified local ingredients than can be used in fish feeds, contributing to a more sustainable aquaculture industry. The AHA project made strides in 2024 in enhancing aquaculture sustainability in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Ghana and Keyna, through capacity building and regional networking, strengthening research, education, and collaborations in aquatic health for long-term improvements. Through support to the FAO, at least seven countries strengthened their capacities to implement the Progressive Management Pathway for Improving Aquaculture Biosecurity (PMP/AB) through their participation in project-sponsored workshops on how to implement the PMP/AB toolkits.Next Steps
