Progress report for
Promoting decent work in fisheries at international level
Achievement at a glance
The EU works extensively on promoting decent work worldwide. There are many projects supported by the EU and executed by the ILO to improve working conditions around the globe, including many in Africa and South America. These projects are always selected based on the local needs. Regarding fisheries and aquaculture, the EU supports partner countries in their reforms of the policy framework, the governance of the sector, supporting the livelihood of small-scale fishers and on technical aspects, and focuses on fishing practices. In its bilateral fisheries agreements (so-called the ‘Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements’ (SFPA)), the EU has worked hand-in-hand with the EU social partners and the ILO, for the introduction of a coherent set of social provisions with the aim of reflecting EU social standards (such as in the Council Directive (EU) 2017/159 implementing the Work in Fishing Convention, 2007) and guarantee decent working conditions to all fishers working onboard EU vessels.Next Steps
